Drain Pipe Slope Calculator (Fall Per Foot)
Enter the pipe size and run length and get the required total fall for a drain, waste, or vent line at the standard minimum slope. The result updates as you type.
Drain Pipe Slope Calculator
Pick a pipe size and enter the run length. Slope is applied at the standard minimum rate for that size.
Standard minimum slope: 1/4 in per foot for 2.5 in and smaller pipe, 1/8 in per foot for 3 in to 6 in pipe. Local amendments and engineered exceptions vary — verify against your adopted plumbing code and AHJ before installing.
How drain slope is calculated
Total fall is just the slope rate multiplied by the run length. Both the IPC and UPC set the same baseline minimums for gravity drain lines: 1/4 in per ft for 2.5 in and smaller pipe, and 1/8 in per ft for 3 in to 6 in pipe.
| Step | Example: 2 in pipe, 20 ft run |
|---|---|
| Minimum slope (2.5 in and smaller) | 1/4 in per ft = 0.25 in/ft |
| Total fall | 0.25 × 20 = 5.0 in |
| As feet + inches | 0 ft, 5.0 in |
Why large pipe uses a flatter slope
Larger-diameter drains carry more flow at a lower velocity for the same slope, so the flatter 1/8 in per ft rate still keeps solids moving without excess fall eating into ceiling or trench depth over a long run. Some jurisdictions allow reduced slope on large-diameter horizontal drains with engineering justification — that is a code-specific exception, not a default.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum slope for a drain pipe?
Under the common IPC/UPC baseline, 2.5 in and smaller drain pipe is sloped at 1/4 in per foot, and 3 in to 6 in pipe at 1/8 in per foot. Larger pipe sizes and local amendments can differ — check your adopted code.
Can a drain pipe have too much slope?
Yes. Most codes cap slope at 1/2 in per foot for pipe 3 in and smaller because excess slope can let liquid outrun solids, leaving waste behind. Very steep drops are typically handled with a vertical fitting instead of over-sloping horizontal pipe.
Does slope required differ by pipe material?
No — minimum slope is a code requirement based on pipe diameter, not material. It applies the same to PVC, ABS, cast iron, or copper drain lines.
Is this calculator based on plumbing code?
It reflects the common IPC/UPC minimum-slope baseline as a planning estimate. It is not a substitute for your locally adopted code or your AHJ’s review — always verify before installing.
