The formula, worked example

Velocity in a full pipe is flow rate divided by cross-sectional area, converted to consistent units. The constant 0.4085 folds in the GPM-to-cubic-feet-per-second conversion and the area formula so you can go straight from GPM and inches to ft/s.

Why velocity matters

Running a supply line too fast causes noise, water hammer, and premature erosion of fittings — especially at elbows. Running it too slow wastes pipe capacity and cost. That is why sizing charts commonly target roughly 5 ft/s as a practical ceiling for hot lines and up to about 8 ft/s for cold lines, though your adopted plumbing code and the pipe manufacturer’s guidance take precedence over any general rule of thumb.
