Deck Material Calculator (Boards & Cost)

By the Trade Template Co. desk · Free, no sign-up · 2026

Enter your deck dimensions and board specs and get the decking boards, joists, and material cost in one pass — with waste and gap spacing built in. The math updates as you type.

Deck Material Calculator

Enter the deck size and the board you are using, including the gap between boards, and read the order quantity and cost.

Boards include a 10% waste allowance for end-cuts and staggered seams. Joists are estimated at 16″ on-center — verify span, spacing, and framing against local code and your deck plan.

How much decking do I need? The formula

Decking coverage depends on the board width plus the gap left between boards for drainage and expansion. Divide the deck area by the coverage of one board’s length to get a board count, then add waste.

StepExample: 16×12 ft deck, 5.5″ boards, 16’ long
Deck area16 × 12 = 192 sq ft
Coverage per board(5.5 + 0.25) ÷ 12 × 16 = 7.67 sq ft
Boards needed192 ÷ 7.67 = 25.04 → 26 boards
With 10% waste26 × 1.10 = 28.6 → 29 boards
Estimated joists (16″ O.C.)(16 × 12) ÷ 16 + 1 = 13 joists

Joist count assumes standard 16″ on-center framing running the width of the deck — heavier loads, wider spans, or a picture-frame border can change spacing. Always confirm framing against your local code and the manufacturer’s span tables before ordering.

Contractor Estimate Calculator (Excel & Google Sheets)

Turn the board count into a priced, itemized estimate — materials, labor, markup, and profit, auto-totaled. The estimate you hand the client after the calculator tells you the quantity.

Don’t forget the substructure

Decking boards are only part of the material list. Budget separately for joists, beams, posts, footings, fasteners, and joist hangers — and hidden fasteners or screws, which run 3 to 5 per board foot of decking depending on the fastening pattern. Composite and PVC decking often need wider joist spacing limits than pressure-treated lumber, so check the manufacturer’s installation guide before finalizing your framing plan.

Once the material list is set, price the job

The calculator gives you the board count and a rough material cost; your bid still needs labor, substructure, and fasteners. Price the full job with a construction estimate template before you quote the client.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how many deck boards I need?

Divide the deck area by the square footage one board covers (its width plus the gap, divided by 12, times its length), then add about 10% for waste and rounding. A 192 sq ft deck with 5.5-inch boards needs roughly 29 boards including waste.

How far apart should deck joists be?

16 inches on-center is the most common spacing for residential decking. Composite decking, angled patterns, or heavier loads may require closer spacing — check the decking manufacturer’s span table and your local code.

How big a gap should I leave between deck boards?

About 1/8″ to 1/4″ for pressure-treated lumber, which shrinks as it dries, and per the manufacturer’s spec for composite or PVC decking, which does not shrink the same way.

Is this deck material calculator free?

Yes — free, no sign-up. Enter your deck size and board specs and read the boards, joists, and estimated cost. Estimates only; confirm framing and spans with your local code.
