How much drywall do I need? The formula
Once you have total area in sq ft, sheets = area (with waste) ÷ sheet size. A standard 4×8 sheet covers 32 sq ft; 4×10 covers 40; 4×12 covers 48. Bigger sheets mean fewer seams to tape and mud, which is why many pros upsize on open walls and ceilings.

With a standard 4×8 sheet (32 sq ft) and 10% waste, about 3.4 sheets per 100 sq ft — round up to 4 for a 100 sq ft room.
How much joint compound do I need per sheet?
Roughly 0.053 lb per sq ft for a 3-coat finish, which works out to about 1.7 lb per 32 sq ft sheet. A 4.5-gallon bucket (about 61 lb) covers roughly 1,150 sq ft.
What size drywall screws should I use?
1–1/4 inch coarse-thread screws are standard for 1/2 inch drywall on wood studs; use 1–5/8 inch for two layers or metal studs. Budget about 1 screw per sq ft.
