How roofing squares actually get calculated
Roofers do not measure the roof itself — they measure the building footprint, then multiply by a pitch multiplier that accounts for the extra surface area created by the slope. The steeper the roof, the more true surface area you are covering per square foot of footprint.

The formula: pitch multiplier = √(1 + (rise÷12)²). Multiply footprint area (length × width) by this number to get true roof area, then divide by 100 to get squares. A 40×30 ft footprint at a 6/12 pitch is 1,200 sq ft of footprint but 1,341.6 sq ft of actual roof — over 13 squares once you account for slope.

Why waste percentage matters more on roofs than most jobs
A simple gable roof can often get by on 7–8% waste. A cut-up roof with multiple hips, valleys, and dormers can easily eat 15% or more in trim cuts and offset seams. Underestimate waste and you are sending a crew back up for a partial bundle mid-job — overestimate slightly and the leftover bundles cover future repairs.

Frequently asked questions
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
For standard architectural (laminate) shingles, 3 bundles cover 1 square (100 sq ft). Some 3-tab shingle lines also run 3 bundles per square, but always confirm the coverage rating printed on the wrapper before ordering.
How do I calculate roofing squares from a footprint?
Multiply the building footprint (length × width) by the pitch multiplier for your roof’s slope, then divide by 100. A steeper pitch multiplier means more actual roof surface per square foot of footprint.
How much waste should I add for a roofing job?
10% is a reasonable default for a simple roof. Add 15% or more for roofs with multiple hips, valleys, dormers, or a complex cut-up footprint, since trim waste climbs fast on cut-up roofs.
